Breaking-in of Arabian horses

Starting your Arabian horse under saddle

We break in Arabian horses to start under staddle in a calm, respectful but consistent manner during their first steps under saddle so that the foundation can be laid for a horse's future life and enjoyment of work.

Since 1987 we keep, breed and trade Arabian horses and because of a super motivated daughter we have decided to make some stables available for clients to break in their Arabian horses. We prefer to position ourselves between the hardcore warmblood “professionals” who are unable to handle sensitive breeds of horses and the natural horsemanship amateurs who are often not consistent enough.

From what age can we start breaking in your Arabian horse?

This depends of course on how fast your Arabian is grown enough. Usually this is possible from the age of 3 but the ideal age is between 4 and 6 years old when the horse is more mature, both physical and mentally.

How do we start your horse under saddle?
During the first week of saddle breaking, we will determine, based on the individual character of the horse and our years of experience, how we can quickly build the right bond to saddle it without endangering ourselves or the horse. When saddling, we will neither ride rodeos nor waste months of time on ground work. As soon as the horse is used to a rider under saddle, it will be ridden to learn walk, trot and canter under a rider. You are welcome to assist us during the schooling.

What can you expect after your Arabian has been started under saddle?
- Your horse will know mounting and dismounting;
- Your horse will be able walk, trot and canter under the man;
- Your horse will be able ride some figures;
- In short, your horse will be ready to start working with you;
- If required, we can organize further schooling in a nearby boarding stable.

Do we take on problem horses?
Arabian horses are normally not problem horses but in the last decades the breed has changed significantly because of exclusive showbreeding as well as the extreme use of embryo transfer. Learn before you buy an Arabian horse and avoid buying horses from lines that have not been tested under saddle. We are definitively not interested in the wacko cases or to solve problems of past maltreatment.

How much does it cost to break in your Arabian?
Our rate is 250 €/week including board. Depending on your horse, the process takes on average between 3 and 6 weeks.
